North York General Hospital (NYGH), including the IODE Children's Centre, is a community teaching hospital serving north central Toronto and the southern York Region. NYGH is home to one of the largest and strongest networks of family physicians in Canada and offers patients a broad range of interdependent diagnostic and clinical health care services. The hospital has approximately 600 beds, 942 medical staff, and handles about 72,000 emergency visits annually.

Customer Need:

NYGH management faced the complexities of recruiting, training, scheduling, and managing a team made up of individual transcription contractors, an aging dictation and transcription system, and an ever increasing demand for transcription services. They needed to streamline their entire service offering, as well as, update their aging systems. NYGH wanted a solution that would provide them not only with the latest in available voice recognition enabled dictation and transcription technology but also give them access to a  team of transcription professionals that could deliver the turn around times for the 500,000 minutes of dictation per year the growing hospital generates.

Accentus Solution:

Through a comprehensive RFP process and after speaking with many of Accentus’ clients in Ontario and across Canada, NYGH opted to deploy a fully hosted outsourced solution. Today all NYGH dictation and transcription is done over Accentus eDoc, a hosted voice recognition enabled dictation and transcription system and by a team of highly qualified Accentus managed transcription professionals.


  • NYGH was able to eliminate the huge capital investment required to acquire a new system or update an aging one by moving to the Accentus’ hosted eDoc solution. Today NYGH has access to the latest dictation, transcription and voice recognition technology available at a fraction of the cost of ownership.
  • Moving to a hosted solution, NYGH was able to eliminate data center costs, server and upgrade costs and most importantly the sizable yearly maintenance and support fees associated with keeping systems up-to-date and running.
  • On the people side, NYGH was able to deploy an outsourced solution where Accentus agreed to take on the entire NYGH transcription team ensuring that valuable human resources along with their years of loyalty and expertise was not displaced.
